Why there are two clocks
Both exist for the same reason: Instagram lets a business answer people who chose to contact it, and nothing else. A comment is public and lower stakes, so it buys seven days. A direct message is someone’s inbox, so it buys twenty-four hours and has to be re-earned every time.
Neither is a vendor policy. Every tool on the official API — this one included — is inside the same box, which is why a feature comparison showing one of them sending outside these windows is showing you a mistake. What are the Instagram reply windows?
Two. A comment may receive a private reply for 7 days from when it was written. A direct message may be replied to for 24 hours from the contact’s last message. Story replies arrive as DMs, so they run on the 24-hour clock.
Can I extend the window by sending something?
No. Only another message from them restarts the DM clock. Nothing you send extends it, and no vendor can sell you around it — the limit is enforced at Meta, not in the tool.
What happens if I try to send after it closes?
Meta rejects the send. A well-built tool checks the window before attempting it and records the reason; a badly built one attempts it, fails, and shows you nothing.
Is there any way to get seven days on a DM?
Meta’s Human Agent permission extends the DM window to seven days, but only for a human replying by hand through an inbox — never for an automation. It is granted per app after review.
Does the comment window run from the post or the comment?
