Free Instagram DM Automation Tools in 2026: Every Free Tier, Compared

What each tool actually gives you for nothing as of August 2026 — contacts, DMs, or replies, and which unit runs out first — including where our own free plan is the wrong choice.

Every tool in this category has a page saying it is free. The pages are all true and none of them are comparable, because each one meters a different unit — contacts, sent DMs, or generated replies — and the unit decides when "free" ends for you.

This is the comparison by unit, as advertised in August 2026. Free tiers change without notice — one of the biggest in the category cut its own to a fraction this spring — so treat every number here as "verify before you build on it."

The three units, and who meters which

Contacts. ManyChat historically owned this category, and its free tier was the default recommendation for years — until it was cut to 25 contacts in March 2026. Twenty-five people is a test, not a tier; if your reels do any numbers at all you will exhaust it the first afternoon. Inro meters contacts too, at around 100. The trap with contact-metering: one person who messages you twice still occupies one slot forever, so dead conversations eat the allowance.

Sent DMs. LinkDM advertises about 1,000 DMs a month free, CreatorFlow about 500, InstantDM about 500, ReplyRush about 1,500. These are honest numbers for the comment-to-DM job. What to check is what counts as a send — some tools count the public reply and the DM as two — and what happens at the cap: a hard stop mid-month is a different product from a nudge to upgrade.

Generated replies. Ours. PostEngage's free plan is 100 AI-written replies a month, with template replies, comment triggers, and lead capture uncapped. The reasoning is on the pricing page and it is the same one this post uses: templates cost nothing to send, so metering them is rent-seeking; a generated reply costs real money per reply, so an unlimited free version of it is either a lie or a subsidy with an expiry date.

Whatever the tool, the free tier ends at its metered unit. Pick the tool whose unit you will exhaust last.

How to choose in five minutes

Your comments are predictable ("price?", "link?", "size?") → you need templates and triggers, not AI. Any of the DM-metered tools works; so does ours with the AI turned off, uncapped. Compare the DM caps against your actual monthly comment count — most creators under 50k followers never hit 500.

Your comments are conversations — people ask real questions in their own words → you need generated replies, and you should compare reply allowances, not DM allowances. A hundred good AI replies beats a thousand template sends that answer the wrong question.

You are choosing for a client → the unit that matters is neither; it is the audit trail. Whatever fires must be explainable later. That is a paid feature everywhere, including here.

The two disqualifiers, before any number

They apply to free and paid alike:

  1. Password login. If the tool connects by asking for your Instagram password rather than Meta's OAuth screen, the price is your account, whatever the tier says. The ban-risk post has the long version.
  2. Cold DMs as a feature. The official API cannot message people who never interacted with you. A tool promising otherwise is in password territory again — why that fails even when it works.

Where our free plan is the wrong choice

Fairness cuts both ways. If you need more than a thousand template DMs a month and zero AI, LinkDM's or ReplyRush's advertised caps are more generous than what our free plan is optimised for — we built for the creator whose comments need judgement, not just volume. And if you need multi-agent inboxes or WhatsApp on the same free tier, nobody honest gives you that free, including us.
