Every "free auto DM" search lands in the same trap: the tools that promise the most are the ones that work by logging into your account with your password and clicking buttons a human is supposed to click. They are free because they are worthless the day Instagram's detection catches the pattern — and it is your account that takes the restriction, not theirs.
So the first filter is not price. It is how the tool connects. If it asks for your Instagram password, close the tab. If it connects through Meta's OAuth screen — the one where Instagram itself asks whether to grant access — you are on the official API, the same one the platform builds for businesses, and nothing about using it is against the rules.
What the official API lets a free tool do
Inside the rules, an automatic DM can be sent when somebody acts first:
- They comment a trigger word on your post → you DM them the link, the price, the guide. This is the comment-to-DM funnel, and it is the highest-converting pattern on the platform because the person literally asked.
- They message you → you answer, within Meta's 24-hour messaging window.
- They reply to your story → same window, same rule.
What it does not let anybody do — free or paid — is message strangers who never interacted with you. Tools that promise cold DMs at scale are back in password territory. We wrote up why cold DM outreach fails even when it does not get you banned; the short version is that reply rates are a rounding error and the account risk is not.
An auto DM is a reply. The moment it stops being a reply, it is spam, whatever the tool calls it.
The free setup, concretely
You need three things, none of which cost money:
A professional Instagram account. Free toggle in Instagram's settings; the API does not talk to personal accounts.
A tool on the official API with a real free tier. Ours gives you 100 AI replies a month, free, no card — with template replies and comment triggers uncapped. The tiers to avoid are "free trial, card required" (that is a paid tool with a delay) and "unlimited free" (that is a password tool with confidence).
One post that earns the DMs. "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it over" outperforms a bio link because the comment is public — every comment is an ad for the next one. Write the DM you would send by hand, once, well. Then let it send that.
The part the free tools skip
Rate discipline. Instagram's limits on how fast an account can message are real, undocumented, and enforced. A tool that fires every DM the second the trigger lands looks exactly like the burst pattern the platform watches for. The boring, safe shape is: a person gets one reply per burst of messages, at most a handful of contacts from you a day, and anything suspicious held rather than sent. If the tool you are trying has no concept of "held", it has no concept of your account surviving the year.
DM limits change and Instagram does not publish them; the truth about ban risk covers what actually triggers action blocks — and it is one more argument for tools that stay under the limits by design rather than asking you to configure a slider.
Start with one automation on one post. If the DMs it sends are ones you would have typed yourself, widen it. If you would not have typed them, no price — including free — makes them worth sending.
